Managing Datasets
Datasets are the fundamental storage unit for recordings in the Gallery. Each dataset contains signal recordings, metadata, and media attachments, and remains fully editable until submitted to the Catalog.
Datasets represent individual recording sessions or observational units within a project. A single project may contain multiple datasets, each capturing distinct sessions or conditions.
Every dataset includes the following information:
- Plant signal recordings collected through the Babbeleaf device
- Environmental metadata, such as GPS location and weather conditions at the time of capture
- User-authored notes that provide additional context
- Plant Family, Genus, Species
Datasets are not limited to a single recording. Multiple recordings may be attached to a single dataset, allowing researchers to document repeated measurements under consistent conditions. In addition, users may attach multiple photographs and other supporting media to a dataset to enhance documentation and provide visual context.
Unlike fixed archival systems, datasets in the Gallery remain fully editable. Users may revise metadata, replace photographs, add or remove recordings, and update notes until the dataset is considered complete. This flexibility allows for iterative refinement of the dataset, ensuring accuracy before submission to the Catalog.
Datasets provide the critical link between project-level metadata and individual recordings. They are designed to be comprehensive, flexible, and editable while preserving the scientific rigor necessary for eventual catalog submission.
